Our mission

NHIT's mission is to ensure that innovation in AI, data, and digital health reaches every community — by connecting federal infrastructure, industry capacity, and community trust into one operational system.

The NHIT system

Four connected layers. One operational bridge.

Each layer solves one gap. Together they turn federal investment into measurable community outcomes.

Intelligence Layer

Data Fusion Center

Fragmented data into decision-ready insight — geospatial, clinical, workforce, and social determinants stitched into one operational picture for partners and communities.

Workforce Engine

NHIT INSPIRED™

Community-based talent pipelines for the AI-ready health economy — CHW, CHOW, apprenticeship, and fellowship tracks aligned with academic and community partners.

Scale Layer

Connected Health & Community Innovation

Proven local models, operationalized regionally and nationally — rural pilots, Puerto Rico and USVI programs, and community-governed AI deployment.

Alignment Layer

Industry Coalition

Payers, providers, vendors, and academia in one room — pre-competitive alignment that turns policy signal into deployable infrastructure.

How the system moves

Trust is the flywheel — every rotation compounds.

NHIT convenes federal, industry, philanthropic, and community actors into a continuous cycle: policy signal → capacity → deployment → evidence → back to policy. Each cycle earns more trust and more capacity for the next.

NHIT Care Campaign → USVI Health Information Exchange

NHIT's Hurricane Irma and Maria recovery effort, launched in September 2017 with AWS, PwC, and Sprint, was the strategic catalyst behind HHS CMS approving $14.7 million for the U.S. Virgin Islands to establish its Health Information Exchange. The funding flowed directly to the Territory — NHIT provided the convening, federal fluency, and technical strategy that made it possible.

Congressional trust · U.S. Senate

All Americans must have access to quality, affordable health care – regardless of a person's ZIP code or resources. Yet too many communities, particularly those that have historically been underserved, continue to face barriers to care. I am grateful for NHIT's work – helping to ensure communities have a voice from the start – and look forward to continuing to work together to build a health care system that serves all of our communities.

Senator Chris Van Hollen United States Senate, Maryland

Territorial trust · U.S. Virgin Islands

NHIT understands that infrastructure without community trust is just hardware. They build both.

Governor Albert Bryan Jr. Governor, U.S. Virgin Islands

Since 2019, NHIT has supported the U.S. Virgin Islands Office of Health Information Technology in advancing the territory's health information exchange capabilities, in collaboration with USVI government leadership and federal partners.

Our approach

High Tech and High Touch — never one without the other.

Most tech-first efforts

  • Build the platform, then look for users
  • Optimize for pilots that don't scale
  • Measure adoption in logins, not lives
  • Treat community as a stakeholder audience

The NHIT approach

  • Start with community trust — then build infrastructure
  • Design for measurable, sustained deployment
  • Measure in health outcomes and workforce readiness
  • Treat community as co-owner and co-operator
